Marcel Wanders is an European Designer, entrepreneur and persistent catalyst behind the Dutch national Droog Design movement. Armed with an Executive MBA from INSEAD, and years of experience consulting literally hundreds of corporations, he is now turning his attention to the forging of early-, mid- and late-stage start-ups serving as Design Partner at Formation 8 in San Francisco.
Marcel Wanders, who graduated cum laude in Product Design from the ArtEZ Academy in Arnhem in 1988, currently heads a studio of 50 international design specialists in Amsterdam and serves as an advisory board member of THNK School of Creative Leadership. As a prolific product and interior designer and art director, Marcel Wanders is ubiquitous with over 1700+ projects to his name for premium brands such as Puma, Alessi, Bisazza, KLM, Flos, Phillips, Swarovski, Starbucks, Nike among scores of others.
In recognition for his career-spanning efforts to bridge design, innovation, technology and business, Business Week selected him as one of Europe’s ’25 leaders of change’ in 2002. In 2006, Elle Decoration awarded Marcel Wanders with the prestigious ‘Designer of the Year’ award. Further recognitions include the Philadelphia Museum of Art ‘Modern Design Collaborative Award Collab’, and the ‘Design Excellence Award’ for Marcel Wanders’ significant contribution to the field of Design in 2009.
His research, in conjunction with the Aeronautics department of the Technical University in Delft, led him to design the ‘Knotted Chair’ (1996), an icon and catalyst for numerous technology-oriented material studies in the field of Product Design. In 2001, Marcel Wanders created the Snotty Vase, the first-ever commercial product produced in 3D printing technology, for which he attained the prominent WIRED Technology Award.
In 2001, Marcel Wanders co-founded the successful Design label Moooi, of which he is also Art Director. Conceived as a platform to host design talent from around the globe, the company employs 40 designers, is present in 79 countries worldwide and is widely-recognized for its innovative and holistic intake on consumer products that surround us daily.
Many of Marcel Wanders’ designs have been selected for world-renown architecture and design collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. In 2009, Marcel Wanders’ first solo-exhibition ‘Daydreams’ opened at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2012, he was invited to present a capsule collection at Beijing’s Capital Museum and in January 2014, Marcel Wanders opened his first major museum retrospective: ‘Marcel Wanders: Pinned Up at the Stedelijk which saw a record attendance of 240.000 visitors.
